Introduction
The building where this museum is located forms part of the premises of the Saint Cross Sanctuary. It is based in the traditional main priest’s home and it is organized in three different rooms, which are dedicated to the history of the Saint Cross, the liturgical elements and the archeological remains of the Sanctuary. Its basic collection belongs to the old museum of Sacre Art and History of the Saint Cross.
It houses collections of ornaments, silverwork and paintings. In the art gallery you can find six remarkable paintings on board from the XVIth century by Hernando de los Llanos, who was a disciple of Leonardo Da Vinci. Four of them narrate the miracles of the Saint Cross Appearance.
Among the silverwork, we find the XVI century Monstrance of the Saint Cross, which was a present of the first Marquis of Velez, Pedro Fajardo. “El portacruz de los Baños”, a gift from Luis Fajardo, the second Marquis of Velez, is another important piece. It is also remarkable the gilt-coated silver box-case donated by the Master of the Order of Santiago, Lorenzo Suarez de Figueroa, around the XIV century.
It is worth mentioning the “Chasuble of Chirinos”, Muslim brocade adapted to the form of the liturgical ornament that the priest Chirinos is believed to have wore at the time of the miraculous appearance of the Cross.
It is also worth seeing part of the old plan of the Castle, recently excavated an old dungeon from the time.
